There's no shortage of advice on increasing salon or spa revenue, but most of it assumes you have a marketing team or hours to spare.

But you can start your marketing with two groups you already know: clients who've stopped booking and regulars who might be ready for a membership. Mangomint's Automated Flows can message both at the moments you choose, so following up doesn't depend on someone remembering to do it.

What are Automated Flows?

Automated Flows send personalized texts and emails for you when key events happen in Mangomint, like a completed appointment or a client's upcoming birthday.

A Flow message can include one of your offers or a link to buy gift cards. Set up a Flow once, and it runs on its own from there.

And the best part about Flows (and really all our features) is that you don't need 15 years of marketing experience to use them.

What can you use Automated Flows for?

Mangomint customers use Flows to:

  • Send review requests and rebooking reminders to clients.

  • Provide custom pre- and post-care instructions based on booked services.

  • Cross-sell and upsell memberships and packages.

  • Notify team members of key events, such as external form submissions.

Flows also work alongside the rest of Mangomint: a Flow text can include your Online Booking link, so clients can book straight from the message.

Flows works best when paired with some of our other features. For one-time marketing sends to your whole list, like a holiday promotion, use Campaigns. For the bigger picture of how your business is doing, check Reporting.

How do Automated Flows work?

Every Flow has three parts:

  • A trigger that starts it. You can choose from 13 triggers, such as a completed appointment or a client birthday.

  • Conditions that decide who gets it, based on details like a client's past appointments or memberships.

  • Actions that happen next, like waiting a few days and then sending a text or email.

Messages can pull in details like the client's first name and the service they booked. To alert your team instead of a client, send the text or email to an internal phone number or email address.

You can start with a pre-built Flow, like a rebooking reminder or a membership cancellation follow-up, and customize the messaging to match your business.

If none of the pre-built Flows fit, build one from scratch and choose the trigger yourself, whether that's a package sale or a submitted form.

You can also give a Flow a goal, such as a client starting a membership. Mangomint shows the percentage of Flow runs that reached the goal, so you can tell whether it's working or needs edits.

How do you increase your salon and spa revenue with Automated Flows?

Flows can help grow revenue on two fronts: winning back lapsed clients and selling more to your regulars.

Win back lapsed clients

Flows act as a safety net for clients who've gone quiet. Start with the pre-built rebooking reminder, or build your own in four steps:

  1. Trigger the Flow when an appointment is completed.

  2. Add a time delay.

  3. Add a condition with client appointment filters so only clients with no future booking get the message.

  4. Send a friendly check-in text, with or without a promo code.

Set the delay based on how often your own clients rebook each service. For broad context, Beauty & Wellness businesses in Mangomint's aggregate benchmark had an average gap of about 63 days between client visits, measured per business. That group spans many business types, so the figure isn't a suggested lapse window for your salon or spa.

Michelle Leach, owner of Pure Beauty Aesthetics, a med spa in Albany, Oregon, has a win-back Flow of her own. "Our 'Miss You' Flow sends clients a 10% off code if they haven't booked in a while," she says. "Even my son got one and texted, 'You miss me? Sweet!'"

Pony Studios, a hair salon in Oakland, California, takes a similar approach, using Flows to reconnect with lapsed clients.

"We're creating revenue from a total vacuum," says Brett Foreman, co-owner and general manager of Pony Studios. "Without that automation, it just wouldn't happen."

Increase revenue from existing clients

Flows can also help you offer memberships and packages at a natural moment, like right after a repeat visit.

For example, a Flow can text clients about your facial membership once they've completed two facial appointments. Add a condition so it only goes to clients who don't already have a membership.

Erika Stephenson owns Lola Rosa Head Spa, which has multiple locations in Maryland. With some help from me (I'm the "Flows fairy" in Lola Rosa's customer story), she has automated:

  • A new client offer ($20 off their first visit)

  • A birthday flow with cheeky, celebratory messages

  • Follow-ups based on services and interest forms

  • Location-specific messages, like door codes for certain suites

"Since setting up the new flows, our books have been packed," Erika said. "Even if a flow only brings in two clients, that's $350 in revenue. It adds up."

Erika's math is worth keeping in mind. A couple of bookings from a Flow still beats zero bookings without one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to send Automated Flows messages?

Flow messages use marketing credits. Mangomint's Marketing add-on starts at $30 a month and covers both Campaigns and Automated Flows. You can also buy credits as you go at 1 cent per credit.

How many credits does a Flow message use?

Each Flow email uses 5 credits. Flow texts start at 10 credits and use more as they get longer, and adding an image to a text adds 20 credits. Flow message pricing in the Learning Center has the full breakdown.

Are appointment reminders the same as Flows?

No. Mangomint's text and email appointment confirmations and reminders are separate, and they're included at no additional cost (read: free!). Flows are for the follow-ups and promotions you set up yourself.

Do I have to build Flows from scratch?

No. Mangomint has pre-built Flows, such as a membership cancellation follow-up, that you can customize. You can also start from scratch with any of the 13 triggers.

  • Link copied
Is there a trigger for clients who haven't visited in a while?

Not a dedicated one. Use the pre-built rebooking reminder, or start a Flow from the Appointment completed trigger. Add a time delay, then a condition so it only reaches clients with no future appointments.

How do I know if a Flow is working?

Give the Flow a goal, like booking an appointment or starting a membership. The Flow's statistics then show the percentage of runs that reached the goal, along with the marketing credits it has used.

Can Flows send messages to my team?

Yes. Address the Flow's text or email to an internal phone number or email address. For example, your front desk can get a heads-up when someone submits an external form.
